Miranda IM (Miranda Instant Messenger) is a legendary, open-source multi-protocol instant messaging client designed specifically for Microsoft Windows. Known for being extremely lightweight, fast, and resource-efficient, it originally earned a cult following in the 2000s for its ability to run on minimal PC memory and fit entirely onto a single 1.44MB floppy disk.

While the original Miranda IM project has been deprecated, it officially lives on today through its active, modernized successor, Miranda NG (Next Generation). Core Philosophy & Architecture

Minimalist Core: Out of the box, the client includes only the most essential framework components, database drivers, and a basic user interface.

Plugin-Based Design: Functionality is modular. Virtually every feature—from specific chat networks to visual themes—is added via an ecosystem of hundreds of user-created plugins.

No Ads: Unlike the heavy official chat clients of its era (like MSN or AIM), Miranda contains absolutely no advertising or bloatware.

High Portability: It requires no formal installation. You can drop the entire application folder onto a USB flash drive and run it on any Windows computer while keeping your history and settings intact. Supported Protocols

Instead of forcing you to run multiple separate chat apps, Miranda consolidates your entire contact list into a single, unified window.

Legacy Networks: Historically supported classic protocols like AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, and Gadu-Gadu.

Modern Integration: Through the modern Miranda NG fork, it actively connects to contemporary networks including Discord, Telegram, WhatsApp, Steam, IRC, and XMPP (Jabber). Advanced Customization

Because the default layout is basic text, advanced users heavily rely on plugins to completely change the app’s behavior:

UI Skinning: Change contact lists, message windows, and icons using custom skins.

Database Management: It securely saves your absolute chat history locally on your hard disk using an encrypted database format. Users can use the database tool to recall, search, or delete massive text archives instantly.

Power Utilities: Plugins offer features like auto-responders, secure TLS connection forcing, RSS feed readers, on-screen display (OSD) notifications, and even weather checkers built directly into your contact list. Miranda IM download | SourceForge.net
